Our Sales Team Talks About the Community

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Our sales team can’t quite get over how rapidly the area around Glenmore and Highland Park has transformed into a vibrant and accessible neighbourhood.

Connie, one of our sales representatives at Glenmore, recently returned from her maternity leave, and she was quite struck by the community’s development in the past year: “Everything is so close by and accessible. It’s like being downtown, but it’s much more peaceful.”

Amanda and Victoria, sales representatives from Glenmore and Highland Park respectively, are equally taken by the area’s urban vibe.

“When I think back to 2008 when I first started working out here, I am absolutely amazed as to the amount of development, both commercial and residential,” comments Victoria. “This area has not only developed, but has been transformed into a beautiful community, rich with amenities, home and shopping.”

“With the amount stores and amenities nearby, it’s become the suburbia Yaletown,” remarks Amanda.

The feedback our team has received from potential homeowners like you has been overwhelmingly positive as well.

People continue to comment that they really appreciate the fact that they can walk across the street and get a cup of coffee. And still have access to wonderful schools and beautiful parkways.

Then there are, of course, the homes.

We’re pretty fond of the two-bedroom plus den homes now available at Glenmore They’re in a great location and have spacious yards. And clearly you are too, only a handful remains.

The three-bedroom B1 plan at Highland Park has also been much admired. The open-concept layout and vaulted ceilings create a spacious, single-family home feel. And the master ensuite features a full five-piece bathroom.

Most of all, you appreciate the fact that our finishings are a representation of the area itself – a blend of “traditional living with a modern twist.” Thanks for noticing.

It is something about the area that captivated us right away, and prompted us to move on this location.

Keep checking in, we will continue to keep you up-to-date about this burgeoning community. And our sales team is always available to chat about the neighbourhood.

Love is in the Air. We Know Where to Go for a Romantic Night Out in South Surrey

Valentines in Surrey

Valentine’s Day. A Hallmark holiday or simply a chance to show that special
someone they really do mean the world to you? Dub us hopeless romantics, but
we’ll go for the latter. Beautiful floral bouquets, softly spoken “I love yous,” intimate
dinners for two – our hearts are a fluttering already…

And in our push for romance, we’ve come up with the perfect lineup of restaurants
around Glenmore and Highland Park destined to set the sparks flying between you
and your sweetheart any night of the week.

It’s amore.
Don Quixote you may not be, but we think you’ll come pretty darn close wining and
dining your sweetheart at White Rock’s Pearl on the Rock. Chef Jeremy Keighley
continues his culinary celebration of life on the coast, preparing stirring, passionate
dishes that connect both land and sea. Couple that with a striking view overlooking
Semiahmoo Bay, and we think you’re set for a night of amore.

Relaxed and refined.
Sometimes a vibrant room filled with an eclectic group of people is all you’re looking
for to guarantee a great night out. Laughter is, after all, one of the best aphrodisiacs,
and it’s nice to feel at ease in an open environment where you can laugh out loud.
Try sipping on a few lively libations at U Lounge – walking distance from Glenmore and Highland Park – to get those romantic juices flowing.

Try something new.
The trepidation of trying something new is sometimes the ultimate way to bring
two people together. So why not test your palate and create some new memories at
Senses Fusion Cuisine on Marine Drive? It’s only short drive or cab from Glenmore
and Highland Park. The menu is laid out tapas-style, so you can cuddle up extra-cozy
and share as many dishes that take your fancy. Cupid will be happy, to be sure.

Mood setter.
There’s nothing quite like the combination of a glass of wine and the sound of
someone tickling the ivories to get you in the mood. Which is why we love the
idea of heading to The Hazelemere Dining Room at Hazelmere Golf Course for Valentine’s Day. House pianist Josef Kaliostro takes to the piano every night at 6 p.m.
to serenade guests as they dine.

Feel Calm and Confident Buying a Home in the Year of the Rabbit

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Like the zodiac signs in Western astrology, the animals of Chinese astrology are thought to dictate personality traits and affect world events in the year they rule. So as we leave the Year of the Tiger and transition into the Year of the Rabbit, we think it only makes sense to consider the year ahead and see what the Chinese zodiac for 2011 has in store for us.

For those looking to purchase a new home at Glenmore or Highland Park, the coming year looks positive indeed. Here’s why:

The Year of the Rabbit means a calmer year of comfort and reflection, compared to the past years of excitement. This is a year meant for indulging in the comforts of home.

2011 is a time for rational and thoughtful decisions to be made, which means you can feel confident that once you’ve made a decision about a home, it will be the right one.

According to Holiday Spot’s Chinese Zodiac, in the Year of the Rabbit “we will act with discretion and make reasonable concessions without too much difficulty.” We will know what amenities and features are truly important to us, and we will recognize when we are being excessive.

It’s also a year traditionally associated with home and family, artistic pursuits, diplomacy and keeping the peace. And that’s excellent news for those in the home buying market. 2011 will be the year to find a home well suited to everyone in your family, at a time when your keen eye for colour and accessories will be eager to take hold.

And if you were fortunate enough to have been born in the Year of the Rabbit, that home buying decision looks even better. “The Rabbit is extremely lucky in business and monetary transactions. Astute at striking bargains, he can always pop up with a suitable proposal or alternative to benefit himself.”

From the team at Glenmore and Highland Park, here’s wishing you and your family a year of health and prosperity.

3 Sites to Help You With Your DIY Decorating

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

If you ask us, January is the perfect month to take on a DIY project. The hubbub of the holidays is all but forgotten, the weather is often less than spectacular and dusk still arrives relatively early in the evening, reminding us that the summer months are a ways away yet.

So grab a gallon of paint, a pair of scissors, some fun appliqués – whatever it is you need to get your DIY project underway. And feel good about saving a few pennies and doing it yourself.

Not sure where you want to begin? Here are some innovative ideas and helpful sites to get your creative juices flowing.

Customize curtains and shades with the help of none other than business magnate and home living guru herself, Martha Stewart. Appliqués are a simple timesaving way to dress up your windows. It doesn’t require any sewing, and the cutouts can be adjusted to fit any size panel. But Martha Stewart’s DIY tips go far beyond windows. Here you’ll find the how-tos for wall projects, furniture projects and accent pieces.

Debbie Travis, Canada’s answer to Martha Stewart in many ways, has always been known for her do-it-yourself projects. From her television series Painted House to her HGTV series Facelift, she’s been filling Canadians with cool projects and ideas for the home. Her how-to gallery has all sorts of ideas for DIY projects, from painted stairs to slat coffee tables.

Perhaps less well known than either Martha Stewart or Debbie Travis, Design*Sponge is another great resource for DIY projects and helpful how-tos. It’s a daily website dedicated to home and product design run by Brooklyn-based writer, Grace Bonney. All set for Valentine’s Day, this week’s DIY is a decorative feature – a crochet heart garland.

Of course, many of the décor and home renovation shops next door to Glenmore and Highland Park will be eager to share their expertise as well.

Our New Showhome is Now Open at Highland Park

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Classic meets contemporary at Highland Park, and that’s certainly illustrated in our brand new showhome that is now open for viewing.

Our amazing interior design team, Insight Design Group, sourced the perfect finishing touches for the sweeping layouts in this two-bedroom plus den showhome.

A warm soft colour palette throughout brightens the rooms, and is the perfect complement to our richly coloured chestnut brown floors. In the living room, a soft pile rug keeps things cozy beside the gas fireplace, while the straightforward lines of a glass coffee table add a contemporary edge to this classic space.

The honed granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and modern farmhouse-style cabinets with sleek silver pulls make for an inviting kitchen at Highland Park. But it’s the placement of an open recipe book and a table set for four that makes you really feel at home.

Upstairs, dark wood accents offset the neutrals and greys in the bed linens and draperies. To add a bit of whimsy and bring the rooms together, the Insight Design team included patterned throw cushions in a muted blue. And natural materials such as woven baskets add a fresh outdoorsy element that subtly reflects South Surrey’s abundant parks and surrounding trails.

Interested in seeing what else the inventive team at Insight Design Group has done? Then make sure to stop by for a visit. We’d love to tell you more about our inspiration behind the design.

A Trip to the Tree Farm

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Piping hot cider, mugs full of hot chocolate, a blazing bonfire. Heading to the tree farm encompasses so much more than just selecting a Christmas tree!

Here’s a rundown of tree farms around Glenmore and Highland Park, so you can try your hand at sawing your own U-Cut this year, or pick up a pre-cut tree.

Armstrong Creek Farms Ltd.
Choose from Colorado Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, Grand Fir, Noble Fir, Norway Spruce and others, or opt for a living tree in a planter that can transplanted to the garden later in the year. Located on 190 Street in Surrey, Armstrong Creek Farms has an excellent selection of U-Cut and pre-cut trees to choose from. And don’t worry about bringing your own saw, along with a refreshment stand, Armstrong Creek Farms has plenty of saws on-hand. The farm only accepts cash, so make sure to head to the bank before you make your way there.

Open: Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Oh Christmas Tree Farms
Formerly known as the Milner Tree Farm, Oh Christmas Tree Farm re-opened in 2004, and has continued to provide families with festive fun since then. The 17-acre farm features a variety of trees, including Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir and Noble Fir. Out toward the Cloverdale/Langley area, Oh Christmas Tree Farm is about a half-hour drive from Glenmore and Highland Park, but we think the easy parking and free hot chocolate by the bonfire makes up for the distance.

Open: Every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Christmas Store at Potters
Potters is the largest Christmas store in Western Canada, with over 28,000 square feet of display space! Along with an assortment of unusual holiday décor, the store is home to a selection of pre-cut trees. So, if you just can’t hack hacking down a tree yourself, you may want to head here. The garden store’s other two locations on 152nd Ave and 72nd Ave also sell a variety of fresh conifers.

Open: Monday, Tuesday & Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m
Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Art Knapp Plantland
Landscaping equipment, model trains, giftware, jewelry and Christmas trees—Art Knapp Plantland sells a lot of product! A quick drive along King George Highway from Glenmore and Highland Park will bring you Art Knapp’s Surrey location where you can purchase a few stocking stuffers along with your pre-cut tree.

Open: Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

We hope you find the perfect Christmas tree!

Upcoming Calendar Events for December 2010

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Never does a day go by at Glenmore and Highland Park where something isn’t happening. That’s especially true now that the holiday season is upon us. But there’s also lots going on in the surrounding area.

To help you muddle your way through your holiday calendar, we thought we’d highlight a few upcoming events in the immediate area and beyond.

Realtors Care Blanket Drive
Starting Monday, November 29th and continuing through to Monday, December 6th, realtors all over the Fraser Valley will be collecting bags, scarves, hats and undergarments for the homeless. A few warm and cozy items will make such a difference for a lot of people this winter. If you have anything suitable to give away, it would be greatly appreciated.

Anthony Sedlak at Kitchen Therapy
Did you know that Glenmore and Highland Park’s neighbourhood kitchen store, Kitchen Therapy, offers cooking classes along with their top-of-the-line kitchen utensils, cook and bakeware? On Wednesday, December 1st from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Anthony Sedlak, celebrity chef and host of Food Network Canada’s The Main, will be teaching his pupils how to create a Moroccan fruit and nut couscous with warm organic chicken and lemon dressing, a conchiglie pasta with smoked bacon and creamed spinach and chocolate peanut butter cream pots. Our mouths are watering already.

Sounds of Christmas in White Rock
Enjoy the sounds of the Welsh Men’s Choir as they return this year to White Rock Baptist Church. Featuring traditional and modern Christmas music as well as “something zany” this evening is sure to lift your spirits. The carols and hymns begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd with tickets ranging from $22 to $25.

Santa’s Big Rigs for Kids Parade
What’s cooler than getting a “honkin’ highway holler” from a big rig? Seeing it up-close-and-personal covered in festive lights, of course! This year, the big rig trucks will be all lit up in Holland Park. Head down to the park at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th with a donation for the Surrey Christmas Bureau to enjoy a night of fun activities, live music and refreshments with the entire family.

Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights
On Sunday, December 5th, Surrey will hold its fifth annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights. Bring a non-perishable food item or children’s toy for either the Surrey Food Bank or the Surrey Christmas Bureau and then prepare to be dazzled by a parade of floats, marching bands and twinkling lights.  The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Cloverdale fairgrounds parking lot and will make its way to historic 176th Street in downtown Cloverdale.

To Decant or Not To Decant at Everything Wine
This one’s for adults only. We mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Glenmore and Highland Park’s local wine store, Everything Wine, regularly hosts wine makers, wine tasting events and a variety of food and pairing courses. Their Tasting Bar will be the locale for another free event on Monday, December 6th. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., learn about the benefits behind decanting your wine, and enjoy a few taste tests in the process.

Breakfast with Santa at the YMCA
Hopefully you’ve got your Christmas wish-list prepared because Old Saint Nick is on his way. This year, your little ones can join him for a special breakfast at the Tong Louie YMCA on Saturday, December 11th. Seating times will be at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Call the YMCA to register at 604-575-9622. Children $5, Adults $8

Stewart Farms Christmas Open House
You and the family are invited to enjoy Christmas the old-fashioned way at Stewart Farms. Make holiday crafts and munch on delicious woodstove-baked treats or simply wander around the 1894 farmhouse decorated to the period for the holiday season. Best of all, it’s only a 12-minute drive from Glenmore and Highland Park. The open house takes place on Saturday, December 11th from noon to 4 p.m.

Train Ride and Visit with Santa at Bear Creek Park
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a Christmas train. Fortunately, you have plenty of time to meet up with Eddy the Engine and Chough the Steam Locomotive at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park. The train, which takes passenger through a Christmas forest display and Santa’s Golden Reindeer Tunnel, runs from Friday, December 3rd to Sunday, January 2nd. Children $6, Adults $7

One of the best things about living at Glenmore and Highland Park has to be the strong sense of community. And what better time to get out and experience it than in the heart of the holiday season?

Is Your Home Winter Ready?

Friday, November 19th, 2010

They’re calling for snow this weekend. Are you ready?

With cooler days and cooler nights just around the corner courtesy of Jack Frost, we thought there was no better time than now to provide you with a few helpful tips to winterize your home.

As a new homeowner at Glenmore or Highland Park, you won’t have to worry about having the furnace serviced or replacing the hot water heater. Nor will you need to worry about cracks in the foundation or weatherstripping gaps and holes around the windows and doors of your home. But there is still plenty you can do to make your home winter ready:

1)   If you haven’t already, clean dry and store all summer gardening equipment.

2)   Drain all of the garden hoses.

3)   Drain the gas from the lawnmower before storing it away for the winter.

4)   Clean out the gutters and use a hose to spray down the downspouts and clear debris.

5)   Trim any tree branches that are hanging too close to the house or electrical wires.

6)   Uncover all south-facing windows to let as much sunlight into your home as possible.

7)   Keep all closet doors closed when possible. There’s no need to heat a space that isn’t in use.

8)   Unplug all electronics and appliances that are not being used. They use energy even when they’re not in use, and unplugging them when you’re not home will help offset the increase in usage.

9)   Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan. Reversing the ceiling fan will actually push warm air downward and keep warm air circulating.

10)  Finally, avoid applying any rock salt to your roof to melt ice or snow. It can damage shingles, and possibly void the manufacturer’s warranty.

There are lots resources available full of information about preparing your home for the winter. The above list is just a quick rundown of some of the simple things you can do to help you feel comfortable and cozy in your new home.

A Taste for the Holidays at Everything Wine

Friday, November 12th, 2010

It’s that time of year. Time to start preparing for the holiday season. And we’ve got just the event to kick off your holiday prep in festive fashion!

It’s called “A Taste for the Holidays,” and it’s happening this weekend at Glenmore and Highland Park’s local wine store, Everything Wine.

One of the biggest wine stores in BC, Everything Wine regularly hosts wine makers, wine tasting events and a variety of food and pairing courses, but we especially love their Tasting Bar where all events are free.

As we mentioned, from November 12 to 15 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., it’s all about tantalizing your taste buds for the holidays as Everything Wine’s Tasting Bar will be presenting a selection of party wines that are perfect for stocking up the cellar this winter. It’s an excellent opportunity to try before you buy and expand your knowledge about wine.

Keen to learn more? Join the store’s VIP Club and receive regular updates about upcoming courses and events or simply walk over from Glenmore and Highland Park. Manager Rick Meinhardt and Assistant Manager Cheryl Couch are looking forward to getting to know their neighbours.
