Our amazing interior design team, Insight Design Group, sourced the perfect finishing touches for the sweeping layouts in this two-bedroom plus den showhome.
A warm soft colour palette throughout brightens the rooms, and is the perfect complement to our richly coloured chestnut brown floors. In the living room, a soft pile rug keeps things cozy beside the gas fireplace, while the straightforward lines of a glass coffee table add a contemporary edge to this classic space.
The honed granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and modern farmhouse-style cabinets with sleek silver pulls make for an inviting kitchen at Highland Park. But it’s the placement of an open recipe book and a table set for four that makes you really feel at home.
Upstairs, dark wood accents offset the neutrals and greys in the bed linens and draperies. To add a bit of whimsy and bring the rooms together, the Insight Design team included patterned throw cushions in a muted blue. And natural materials such as woven baskets add a fresh outdoorsy element that subtly reflects South Surrey’s abundant parks and surrounding trails.

With the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic recently wrapped, our very own Canucks leading the Western Conference with 60 points and the 11th edition of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada set to air in a month’s time, it’s no surprise we’ve got hockey on the brain.
In Surrey, one of the best ways catch to the Great Canadian Game is to check out the local Junior A Hockey Club, the Surrey Eagles, in action.

It’s not just great hockey (which it really is!) but it’s also just a great experience. With energetic music, local youth players during intermission, a Frisbee toss, great giveaways, and autograph signing after the game, the event is much like a mini-NHL experience but without the high price, long drive and total chaos.
On Sunday home games Scotiabank hosts a free public skate with the Surrey Eagles. Pick up your free skate pass at your local Scotiabank. There will be a mini-game for the kids and prizes for participants. The next skate is on January 23rd following the 4 p.m. game vs. The Langley Chiefs.
Just a reminder that the bank isn’t open on Sundays, so you’ll want to plan ahead and pick up your passes during business hours. While you’re there, enter your 5 to 12-year-old in the Scotiabank 7th Man In contest for a chance to skate with the local stars during our national anthem, and join them in the dressing room before enjoying a free game.

Have a plan, and know your goals before you begin. Without a plan, you have nothing to follow and it’s much easier to lose site of your end objective.
Create realistic goals. If you set your expectations too high as soon as you set out of the gates, you’ll soon find yourself losing steam.
People are often keen to begin the new year with a New Year’s Resolution Diet. But be aware that under eating is just as problematic as overeating.
Always start your day off with a meal rather than a liquid substitute. Your brain does not actually recognize liquid as a food and will therefore not jumpstart your metabolism.
Keep your workouts efficient – longer doesn’t necessarily mean better. After 45 minutes, your productivity level drops dramatically.
Try something fun and exciting. Break your regular routine by trying some new classes, working with a trainer, joining a dance class or signing up for a community run.
Have a workout buddy. They’ll keep you motivated and hold you accountable to your workouts.
Write down everything that you consume. You may be surprised to see what is fueling your body once it is written down on paper.

Way back in the summertime—gosh, it seems so long ago—we took you through a day in the life at Glenmore and Highland Park.
Since then, a lot has changed: the days have become shorter; the leaves have fallen from the trees; new shops have opened at Grandview Corners across the street from Glenmore and Highland Park; and the community has grown.
Waking up here you’ll still be greeted by carefully landscaped gardens and decorative arbours, but a layer of frost will have replaced the early morning dew.
Venture to De Dutch for a hearty breakfast with friends. Their sweet and savoury pannekoekens are just the thing to warm you up on a winter’s day, and keep you going for a busy day of shopping in the neighbourhood.

Here’s a rundown of tree farms around Glenmore and Highland Park, so you can try your hand at sawing your own U-Cut this year, or pick up a pre-cut tree.
Armstrong Creek Farms Ltd.
Choose from Colorado Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, Grand Fir, Noble Fir, Norway Spruce and others, or opt for a living tree in a planter that can transplanted to the garden later in the year. Located on 190 Street in Surrey, Armstrong Creek Farms has an excellent selection of U-Cut and pre-cut trees to choose from. And don’t worry about bringing your own saw, along with a refreshment stand, Armstrong Creek Farms has plenty of saws on-hand. The farm only accepts cash, so make sure to head to the bank before you make your way there.
Open: Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oh Christmas Tree Farms
Formerly known as the Milner Tree Farm, Oh Christmas Tree Farm re-opened in 2004, and has continued to provide families with festive fun since then. The 17-acre farm features a variety of trees, including Douglas Fir, Grand Fir, Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir and Noble Fir. Out toward the Cloverdale/Langley area, Oh Christmas Tree Farm is about a half-hour drive from Glenmore and Highland Park, but we think the easy parking and free hot chocolate by the bonfire makes up for the distance.
Open: Every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Christmas Store at Potters
Potters is the largest Christmas store in Western Canada, with over 28,000 square feet of display space! Along with an assortment of unusual holiday décor, the store is home to a selection of pre-cut trees. So, if you just can’t hack hacking down a tree yourself, you may want to head here. The garden store’s other two locations on 152nd Ave and 72nd Ave also sell a variety of fresh conifers.

Art Knapp Plantland
Landscaping equipment, model trains, giftware, jewelry and Christmas trees—Art Knapp Plantland sells a lot of product! A quick drive along King George Highway from Glenmore and Highland Park will bring you Art Knapp’s Surrey location where you can purchase a few stocking stuffers along with your pre-cut tree.

So before you head out and purchase that majestic Noble Fir, you’ll want to make sure you have a reliable tree stand—one that manoeuvres easily and is deep enough for a reasonably large tree trunk. Fortunately, as a resident at Glenmore and Highland Park, finding a great tree stand should be a relatively easy feat considering Home Depot is just a block away. While you’re there you might want to check out there Christmas tree selection. Between December 2nd and December 8th only, receive a $25 coupon with the purchase of any fresh-cut tree.

Realtors Care Blanket Drive
Starting Monday, November 29th and continuing through to Monday, December 6th, realtors all over the Fraser Valley will be collecting bags, scarves, hats and undergarments for the homeless. A few warm and cozy items will make such a difference for a lot of people this winter. If you have anything suitable to give away, it would be greatly appreciated.
Anthony Sedlak at Kitchen Therapy
Did you know that Glenmore and Highland Park’s neighbourhood kitchen store, Kitchen Therapy, offers cooking classes along with their top-of-the-line kitchen utensils, cook and bakeware? On Wednesday, December 1st from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Anthony Sedlak, celebrity chef and host of Food Network Canada’s The Main, will be teaching his pupils how to create a Moroccan fruit and nut couscous with warm organic chicken and lemon dressing, a conchiglie pasta with smoked bacon and creamed spinach and chocolate peanut butter cream pots. Our mouths are watering already.
Sounds of Christmas in White Rock
Enjoy the sounds of the Welsh Men’s Choir as they return this year to White Rock Baptist Church. Featuring traditional and modern Christmas music as well as “something zany” this evening is sure to lift your spirits. The carols and hymns begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd with tickets ranging from $22 to $25.
Santa’s Big Rigs for Kids Parade
What’s cooler than getting a “honkin’ highway holler” from a big rig? Seeing it up-close-and-personal covered in festive lights, of course! This year, the big rig trucks will be all lit up in Holland Park. Head down to the park at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th with a donation for the Surrey Christmas Bureau to enjoy a night of fun activities, live music and refreshments with the entire family.
Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights
On Sunday, December 5th, Surrey will hold its fifth annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights. Bring a non-perishable food item or children’s toy for either the Surrey Food Bank or the Surrey Christmas Bureau and then prepare to be dazzled by a parade of floats, marching bands and twinkling lights. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Cloverdale fairgrounds parking lot and will make its way to historic 176th Street in downtown Cloverdale.
To Decant or Not To Decant at Everything Wine
This one’s for adults only. We mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Glenmore and Highland Park’s local wine store, Everything Wine, regularly hosts wine makers, wine tasting events and a variety of food and pairing courses. Their Tasting Bar will be the locale for another free event on Monday, December 6th. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., learn about the benefits behind decanting your wine, and enjoy a few taste tests in the process.
Breakfast with Santa at the YMCA
Hopefully you’ve got your Christmas wish-list prepared because Old Saint Nick is on his way. This year, your little ones can join him for a special breakfast at the Tong Louie YMCA on Saturday, December 11th. Stewart Farms Christmas Open House
You and the family are invited to enjoy Christmas the old-fashioned way at Stewart Farms. Make holiday crafts and munch on delicious woodstove-baked treats or simply wander around the 1894 farmhouse decorated to the period for the holiday season. Best of all, it’s only a 12-minute drive from Glenmore and Highland Park. The open house takes place on Saturday, December 11th from noon to 4 p.m.
Train Ride and Visit with Santa at Bear Creek Park
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a Christmas train. Fortunately, you have plenty of time to meet up with Eddy the Engine and Chough the Steam Locomotive at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park. The train, which takes passenger through a Christmas forest display and Santa’s Golden Reindeer Tunnel, runs from Friday, December 3rd to Sunday, January 2nd. Children $6, Adults $7
